A big investment from the federal government for access to suicide prevention.
In an announcement, Friday, Health Minister Marjorie Michel says the feds will spend up to $102.2 million over the next two years to support the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline.
She says it is a “critical service” for Canadians in distress.
“We know that asking for help is not always easy – especially in moments of crisis. That is why 9-8-8 has been so important for Canadians,” says Michel. “Through visits to 9-8-8 partner locations across the country, I’ve seen firsthand how trained responders provide hope, compassion and support in moments of crisis.
Launched in 2023, the hotline is for anyone who is experiencing a suicide crisis or is worried about someone close to them.
You can call or text 9-8-8 any time to access the bilingual service 24/7/365.
Ottawa says on average, 13 people die by suicide every day and more than 250 attempt it.
The feds have already invested $177 million over three years to the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health for the hotline.
Since it launched on November 30, 2023, 9-8-8 has responded to more than 800,000 calls and texts.
