An organization located in Thunder Bay is raising money to support education in remote First Nation communities.
Mikinakoos Children’s Fund is collecting donations through August to support traditional land-based learning in the region.
According to the organization, many indigenous communities incorporate land-based learning into their curriculum.
The teaching typically occurs outside on the land, in forests, near lakes and traplines, and is guided by Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
The learning is focused on experiential education that is rooted in tradition and relationships with the land, language, spirit and community.
“Bringing land-based learning experiences to schools in the north is so important,” says Executive Director Stephanie Paxton. “Not only does it allow children to develop practical skills, it also helps to revitalize Indigenous knowledge and culture for the next generation.”
“We want to see these education programs delivered in a safe way, and to do that schools need supplies such as camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, and mats), safety gear (first aid kits, compasses, sunscreen, bug spray), outdoor gear (fishing gear, fire starting kits, water bottles, hats), and creative supplies (journals, stationary, art supplies, traditional beading materials).”
Mikinakoos Children’s Fund serves 33 First Nations communities, and the hope is that the organization can deliver as many supplies as possible.
Donations are being accepted until August 31 and can be made by clicking here.
The organization has set a goal of raising $5,000.
