The provincial government is expanding its support for hydrogen as an energy source.
A fund to foster projects is being doubled.
The $30 million Hydrogen Innovation Fund sees $15 million available to projects that focus on electricity system benefits, including storage, generation and services that strengthen the grid.
The other $15 million will support broader applications such as hydrogen-powered transportation, hydrogen hubs, and new ways to connect producers to end users.
Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries Sam Oosterhoff says it will help Ontario become a global hub for hydrogen innovation.
“Hydrogen is both a clean energy source and a major economic opportunity,” says Oosterhoff.
“It offers our energy-intensive industries, from steel to auto parts to manufacturing and agriculture, a competitive advantage with clean, reliable fuel solutions that reduce emissions while creating good paying jobs at home.”
Fifteen projects benefit from the fund put in place in 2023.
Natural Resources Canada studies suggest hydrogen could make up as much as 18 percent of the country’s energy use by 2050.
Several companies are currently exploring areas in northern Ontario for additional resources.
