Your local book store could be hit harder by tariffs than others.
That’s according to the Giller Prize team, one of Canada’s largest and most prestigious literary awards. In 2024, Anne Michaeals took home the title for her novelĀ Held.
Many of their books are made in the U.S., and many stores have tight margins.
A slight shift in the price could mean they have fewer books on the shelves.
And the books they do have could be more expensive.
To help out, the team says you should buy from local booksellers.
They say you can also ask your MP to exclude books from retaliatory tariffs.
“Increased costs could threaten their viability, leading to fewer bookstores in our communities,” the release reads.
