A tentative agreement has been reached between the city of Kenora and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 191.
The parties have been collectively bargaining to renew an agreement on employment terms for 140 municipal employees.
“Council is pleased that the parties were able to reach a tentative agreement,” said Mayor Andrew Poirier. “This means that our CUPE Local 191 workers will continue to deliver the day-to-day services that are important to our community. We thank both parties for their determination to reach a resolution and the ongoing commitment to the process.”
The deal still needs to be ratified so the strike deadline that was initially set for Saturday just after midnight has been extended to Friday to allow this to happen.
A vote will be held by the union to see if its members are in favour of the deal.
The city says the agreement details won’t be shared until the deal has been confirmed.
If the strike deadline passes and the deal has not been ratified it does not mean there will be a strike, only that the employees are in a legal position to do so.
The Moncrief Construction Sports Center and the Keewatin Memorial Arena would both have been closed for the duration of a strike.
