Sioux Lookout residents are warned to keep their pets inside when possible.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says multiple wolf sightings and incidents involving dogs have been reported over the last two weeks in the Drayton Road area.
Conservation Officers are now asking the public to be aware of wolves in their neighbourhoods and to take the necessary steps to avoid attracting wildlife.
Tips include:
– Don’t feed wildlife such as deer and remove any salt blocks,
– Keep pet food indoors,
– Remove bush and forest cover that can help conceal predators,
– Ensure you have a well-lit yard or use motion-sensitive lighting,
The MNRF adds cats and small dogs may be seen as prey by wolves, while larger dogs may be seen as competitors. Tips to avoid these situations include:
– Feed your pets indoors,
– Don’t allow pets to roam free,
– Walk your dog on a leash at all times,
– Don’t leave pets unattended outside unless they are in a kennel with a secure top,
– Spay or neuter your dogs,
If a wolf poses an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, residents are asked to call 911 immediately.
